Muzyczne Poniedziałki: just their music, songs and stories!

Tegoroczna propozycja muzyki świątecznej niech będzie mniej oczywista! W 1998 James Galway, wirtuoz-flecista z irlandzkiego Belfastu, oraz  Phil Coulter, pianista z Derry - nie, nie tego od Stephena Kinga, mówimy o drugim największym mieście Irlandii Północnej - nagrali wspólnie album opowiadający o wielkiej dziewiętnastowiecznej irlandzkiej emigracji do Stanów. Jak czytamy w towarzyszącej płycie narracji Coultera,

The story is set in the late 1800, when well over two million men, women and children - over a quarter of the population - left the shores of Ireland to seek a new life in North America. It concerns one group of emigrants who sailed from Derry (...) in the winter of 1866 (...) They had precious few possessions - maybe a battered old fiddle - and no photographs to remind them of their homes and loved ones. Just their music, songs and stories.

Galway i Coulter namówili nawet Liama Neesona - kolejnego Irlandczyka - by, przy akompaniamencie muzyki, przeczytał na albumie autentyczny list z epoki. Great stuff.

Dziś nacieszmy się efektownym utworem tytułowym całego albumu! Finally underway, the ship pulls clear of Lough Foyle heading for the open sea. The emigrants crowd the decks looking longingly ashore, straining for one final glimpse of the hills of their homeland. All are heartbroken. Some are terrified of what lies ahead, others are excited at the adventure of this Winter's Crossing.
